For the Witch--laying aside all question as to magic or its non-existence--was once a real factor or great power in rebellious social life, and to this very day--as most novels bear witness--it is recognised that there is something uncanny, mysterious, and incomprehensible in woman, which neither she herself nor man can explain.

"For every woman is at heart a witch."

We have banished the broom and the cat and the working miracles, the Sabbat and pacts with Satan, but the mystery or puzzle is as great as ever; no one living knows to what it is destined to lead. Are not the charms of love of every kind, and the enjoyment of beauty in all its forms in nature, mysteries, miracles, or magical?

To all who are interested in this subject of woman's influence and capacity, this Evangel of the Witches will be of value as showing that there have been strange thinkers who regarded creation as a feminine development or parthenogenesis from which the masculine principle was born. Lucifer, or Light, lay hidden in the darkness of Diana, as heat is hidden in lee. But the regenerator or Messiah of this strange doctrine is a woman Aradia, though the two, mother and daughter, are confused or reflected in the different tales, even as Jahveh is confused with the Elohim.

- Charles Leland, Aradia or the Gospel of the Witches.

The following is taken from Fulgur Limited

We are honoured to announce Fulgur is now working with Rev. Michael Bertiaux on a new work entitled Ontological Graffitti. The book is the first major work by the author since his ground-breaking Voudon Gnostic Workbook in 1988 and will contain a huge selection of his art in full colour with a textual exploration of the subject matters covered. No publication date is yet set, but further news will be forthcoming in late 2005.

Essential Magick [Jan. 22nd, 2006|01:26 pm]

But first, to penetrate this barrier, the soul with which you listen must be sharpened by intense enthusiasm, purified from all earthlier desires. Not without reason have the so-styled magicians, in all lands and times, insisted on chastity and abstemious reverie as the communicants of inspiration. When thus prepared, science can be brought to aid it; the sight itself may be rendered more subtle, the nerves more acute, the spirit more alive and outward, and the element itself--the air, the space-- may be made, by certain secrets of the higher chemistry, more palpable and clear. And this, too, is not magic, as the
credulous call it; as I have so often said before, magic (or science that violates Nature) exists not: it is but the science by which Nature can be controlled. Now, in space there are millions of beings not literally spiritual, for they have all, like the animalculae unseen by the naked eye, certain forms of
matter, though matter so delicate, air-drawn, and subtle, that it is, as it were, but a film, a gossamer that clothes the spirit.

Hence the Rosicrucian's lovely phantoms of sylph and gnome. Yet, in truth, these races and tribes differ more widely, each from each, than the Calmuc from the Greek,--differ in attributes and powers. In the drop of water you see how the animalculae vary, how vast and terrible are some of those monster mites as compared with others. Equally so with the inhabitants of the atmosphere: some of surpassing wisdom, some of horrible malignity; some hostile as fiends to men, others gentle as messengers between earth and heaven.

He who would establish intercourse with these varying beings resembles the traveller who would penetrate into unknown lands. He is exposed to strange dangers and unconjectured terrors. THAT INTERCOURSE ONCE GAINED, I CANNOT SECURE THEE FROM THE CHANCES TO WHICH THY JOURNEY IS EXPOSED. I cannot direct thee to paths free from the wanderings of the deadliest foes. Thou must alone, and of thyself, face and hazard all.

- Sir Bulwer-Lytton, Zanoni

I had an interesting letter from England with a lot of information on booktitles written by Eugene Vintras - but they're all in French. Does anyone know of Vintras book translated into English, or of Vintras lithugical work or the like? All materials and all information would be welcome.

Debate [Dec. 29th, 2005|08:50 am]

I recently had a letter in which a person wrote:

I currently have quite a few Gnostic and Buddhist books which state that Creation itself is the great crime and that the Creator is a monster who feeds from our suffering. In these books the single greatest tragedy is birth itself. Lucifer is mankind's savior who points the way out of this cruel prison and assists us in seeing beyond our illusions.

How do you view this?
